Munnar sits at 1,600 metres in the Western Ghats, so its weather is rarely extreme. But the best time to visit depends on what you want: misty mountain drives, gushing waterfalls, or quiet estate walks. Here is a month-by-month breakdown to help you pick.
Winter: December to February — the classic season
This is peak Munnar season for a reason. Days are bright and crisp (15–25°C), nights are cool enough for a jacket, and the tea gardens glow emerald green after the monsoon. It is ideal for sightseeing — Eravikulam National Park, Mattupetty Dam, Top Station — and for the scenic Kochi to Munnar cab route. The downside: hotels charge premium rates and weekends get crowded, so book your cab and stay at least two weeks ahead.
Summer: March to May — escape the plains heat
While the rest of Kerala swelters, Munnar stays pleasantly cool (19–28°C). This is when Bangalore and Chennai families head to the hills. Waterfalls may be thinner, but the roads are less misty and you get clearer valley views. Prices drop slightly after mid-April, making it a good-value window if you do not mind mild warmth.
Monsoon: June to September — green, dramatic, tricky
The hills turn deep green, Cheeyappara and Valara falls thunder beside the highway, and the crowds vanish. But heavy rain can trigger landslides on the ghat roads, and Eravikulam National Park closes during the Nilgiri Tahr breeding season (usually Feb–Apr, though some years extend). If you love rain and mist, go — but keep your itinerary flexible and travel with a local driver who knows which roads are safe.
Post-monsoon: October to November — the sweet spot
The landscape is still lush from the rains, waterfalls are flowing, and the winter crowds have not arrived yet. This is the best time for photographers and for travellers who want good weather without peak-season prices.
Our recommendation
For first-time visitors, December to February is unbeatable. For budget travellers and photographers, October to November is nearly as good. If you want the waterfalls at their fullest, visit just after the monsoon in September.
