Gokarna is two destinations in one: a pilgrimage town centred on the ancient Mahabaleshwar Temple, and a beach town with Om, Kudle, Half Moon, and Paradise beaches. The beaches are reached by short treks over forested headlands, giving Gokarna a more adventurous feel than Goa's beach-shack strips. A cab gets you from Goa or Bangalore with luggage, then between the temple and the beach drop-offs.
Green months = ideal weather. Grey months = monsoon/off-season (can be beautiful but expect rain).
About 485 km — roughly 9 to 10 hours by cab. The journey is long; many travellers break it at Hampi or Hubli, or fly into Goa (140 km away, 3.5 hours).
Goa has more infrastructure, nightlife, and flight connectivity. Gokarna is quieter, cheaper, and better for trekking between beaches. Families and temple-goers lean toward Gokarna; party seekers toward Goa.
October to March. Summer is hot and humid; monsoon (Jun–Sep) brings rough seas and trekking closures. Shivratri (Feb/Mar) is a major pilgrimage festival.
Yes — the coastal trail connects Gokarna Beach → Kudle → Om → Half Moon → Paradise. It takes 2–3 hours one way with modest fitness, and most people do Kudle–Om–Half Moon–Paradise as a day hike.
