Famous For
Kabini is the backwater edge of Nagarhole National Park, where the reservoir draws wildlife from deep forest to drink. Boat safaris here are among the best in South India — elephants line the banks in dry season, crocodiles sun on rocks, and leopards (including the legendary melanistic panther) are sometimes spotted on the fringes. A cab is essential: the lodges are spread out and the nearest railway/airport is Mysore, 80 km away.

Green months = ideal weather. Grey months = monsoon/off-season (can be beautiful but expect rain).
About 210 km — roughly 5 hours by cab via Mysore and Hunsur. From Mysore it is only 80 km (2 hours), so Kabini is usually combined with a Mysore stay.
They are adjacent reserves with similar wildlife. Kabini is famous for boat safaris and leopard/black-panther sightings. Bandipur is known for tiger sightings and jeep safaris. With time, do both.
March to May, the dry season, when herds gather at the reservoir to drink. Boat safaris at this time are exceptional. July–September sees lush scenery but less predictable sightings.
Some operators offer morning/evening jeep safaris, but most lodges bundle stays with safaris. Pre-booking is essential and slots fill up months ahead during summer.
