Munnar has no railway station and no airport, so every traveller has to cover the last leg by road. The question is: cab, bus, or a train-plus-road combo? For most visitors, the answer is a cab — here is why.
Option 1: Cab — door to door, scenic and comfortable
A Kochi to Munnar cab takes 3.5–4 hours and costs a fixed price per vehicle. You are picked up from the airport, hotel, or railway station and dropped at your Munnar resort. More importantly, you control the stops: the Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls, Adimali for tea, and viewpoints that buses fly past.
For families, groups, honeymooners, or anyone with luggage, this is the obvious choice. You also avoid the last-mile auto negotiation in Munnar, where many hotels sit on winding estate roads.
Option 2: Bus — cheap but inflexible
KSRTC and private buses run from Ernakulam and Aluva to Munnar. The fare is low, but the journey takes 5–6 hours and the buses do not stop at the waterfalls. If your Munnar hotel is outside the town centre, you will need an auto or cab from the bus stand, which can erase the cost savings.
Option 3: Train — there is no direct train
The nearest major railway stations are Aluva and Ernakulam. From either, you still need a 3.5-hour road journey to Munnar. A train only makes sense if you are already travelling by rail and do not mind the transfer. For airport arrivals, it adds an unnecessary leg.
The verdict
Take a cab from Kochi Airport to Munnar if you value time and comfort. Take the bus only if you are a solo budget traveller with a light backpack and a hotel near the Munnar bus stand.
