Kochi Airport to Thekkady takes you from sea level straight into spice country. The route via Kothamangalam and Painavu climbs through rubber estates and cardamom hills to Periyar Tiger Reserve on the Tamil Nadu border. It is the longest common airport transfer in Kerala tourism — but the scenery earns it: the final hour winds through dense forest and spice plantations that smell of pepper and cardamom.

4.5 to 5.5 hours for the 190 km, depending on traffic near Kothamangalam and how often you stop. The route via Munnar is longer (6+ hours) but passes tea gardens.
If your itinerary includes both, start with whichever order your hotels are booked in — the drive times are similar. Direct to Thekkady first works well for early-morning flights, since you reach by afternoon safari time.
The highway sections are fine, but we recommend reaching the ghat section (Painavu onward) before dark in monsoon months. For evening landings, a Kochi or Munnar overnight stop is more comfortable.
Yes — it adds about 1.5 hours including the detour. Worth it between November and February when migrant birds are present. Tell us at booking so the driver plans the timing.
